Showers and thunderstorms continue across far southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa late this evening. These showers and thunderstorms are ahead of a cold front that has been slowly moving east through the region. This front is expected to clear the area around midnight, bringing cooler and quieter weather behind it. Temperatures cool into the 40s across much of the area with any 50s confined to portions of southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa Thursday morning. Light winds and clear skies may result in patchy shallow fog, but this threat remains low. Low-level moisture remains very shallow behind the front as cold, drier air filters in from the north. Temperatures warm into the 60s by Thursday afternoon with plentiful sunshine for a pleasant Fall day.
Our next weather system begins to approach the region heading into Friday. The previously mentioned cold front will stall just south of our area across the Central Plains. At the same time, a shortwave trough will lift northeast from the Southern Rockies into the Central Plains. Warm advection and isentropic ascent ahead of this feature helps to initiate thunderstorms late Thursday evening into early Friday morning. Any thunderstorms gradually spread north heading into Friday afternoon as the weather system continues to approach the area. Unfortunately, portions of northeast Nebraska may miss out on this rainfall. Temperatures on Friday remain similar to Thursday with the front remaining stalled to the south of the area and increasing cloud cover.
The aforementioned weather system begins to move east of the area heading into Saturday, Halloween. Rain chances taper off through the afternoon with the evening of Halloween appearing dry. This is welcomed news for anyone partaking in trick-or- treating. Temperatures remain in the 60s during Saturday afternoon, cooling into the upper 50s by evening. Sunday sees the return of quiet weather as we move into a lull between weather systems.
Weather early next week appears active. Model guidance is in relatively good agreement that a strong upper-level low pressure will take shape over the Central Plains on Monday heading into Tuesday. As this occurs, widespread rain chances are anticipated. At this time, our region remains along the center of the track of this system, thus keeping temperatures cooler with more of a steady rainfall. Rainfall could still be heavy at times with modified tropical moisture helping to feed this system. That being said, a more northerly track could bring warmer temperatures and thunderstorms into the forecast. There remains some uncertainty with the exact evolution of this system, so stay tuned as the finer details become clearer this weekend. In either event, cooler weather filters in behind this weather system by the middle of the week allowing 50s to return to the forecast.
Aviation

KOFK: Very patchy dense fog has been impacting low-lying and open areas for the past several hours. Expect the low visibility to continue at the terminal through at least 14Z, with conditions gradually improving as the sun comes up. By mid- morning, skies are expected to start clearing out. Another storm system moves into the region this evening, bringing chances for showers and thunderstorms to KOMA/KLNK. There is a 20-30% of a few isolated storms potentially reaching KOFK tonight, with potential impacts between 08Z and 12Z. However, there is still some lower confidence in how far north these storms could get, so held off on a mention in prevailing conditions.
KOMA: Ceilings continue to be an issue early this morning at the terminal. Put in a tempo group through 14Z for some very patchy fog along the Missouri River and potentially impacting the terminal. It does look like the fog near the terminal is starting to dissipate a bit. Should have clearing skies by 15Z. Another storm system moves in from the south this evening, bringing chances for showers and thunderstorms to the region. The best chances for storms will be after 05Z; however, could see an isolated shower or storm develop after 03Z.
KLNK: Conditions are currently VFR at the terminal. There is a lower cloud deck (500-900ft) just to the southeast of the terminal which may clip it briefly, resulting in some slightly lower ceilings. Further into the morning, expect clear skies and winds out of the east. Ceilings lower again this evening as another storm system lifts in from the south. A few showers may be possible after 00Z but the better chances for showers and storms impacting the terminal will be after 05Z.
