Discussion
Issued at 224 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026
Patchy dense fog is possible early this morning over central Kansas. Current satellite water vapor imagery shows an upper level wave over the southwestern states moving northeast with associated showers/storms ahead of this wave over Texas. This activity will gradually spread northward into Oklahoma and Kansas today with rain chances increasing for Kansas during the afternoon hours. Strong or severe storms are not expected with this activity due to weak levels of wind shear/instability. Scattered rain showers with a few embedded storms will continue for the evening hours with some lingering rain showers into Saturday as the upper level wave lifts northeast of Kansas by Saturday afternoon. A lull in the precipitation activity looks to follow for Saturday night through Sunday.
Models in decent agreement with next upper level wave ejecting from the Rockies into Kansas late Sunday night into Monday. More widespread showers and storms look to spread across the region this period. Wind shear looks to increase but the amount of instability is more uncertain which leads to lower confidence on potential for strong to severe storms on Monday. The upper level wave will move slowly east of Kansas by Tuesday night with showers/storms tapering off west to east Tuesday night into Wednesday. Daytime highs will be near seasonal values for early November next week.
Aviation
Issued at 609 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026
Poor aviation conditions will impact central Kansas this morning with very low cigs and dense fog. The fog will begin to diminish late this morning with cigs gradually rising into the IFR and MVFR category into the afternoon hours. Meanwhile scattered to numerous showers and storms are expected to spread northward from Oklahoma into Kansas this afternoon and tonight. Cigs will remain or evolve into MVFR/IFR category by this evening.
