Key messages
- Scattered mountain snow showers this evening into tonight.
- Mainly dry with seasonable temperatures Wednesday into the second half of the week.
- Another weather system may impact the region late this weekend into early next week.
Update
Winds are decreasing across the area this evening ahead of a secondary shortwave trough that is approaching the region from the west. With this, winds will remain breezy around Livingston and Nye tonight, but no strong winds are forecast. Scattered mountain snow showers are also expected as this wave moves through the region tonight. With this, a trace to a couple inches of snow are forecast in the mountains, greatest over the Absaroka- Beartooth Mountains. While areas of the plains will generally remain dry, a few isolated rain/snow showers are expected over the foothills this evening. There is also a slight chance of showers in far south-eastern Montana late tonight into Wednesday morning. With this, potential precipitation amounts remain low. Otherwise, tonight will see low temperatures in the 20s and 30s ahead of a mainly dry and seasonable day on Wednesday. LA
Discussion
Through Monday:
Behind the showers over the east this morning, pressure rises working into the region behind the Pacific trough were bringing gusty westerly winds to the area. Strongest winds have been over the western foothills where gusts to 50 mph have been observed. Expect the winds to continue through the afternoon, backing off this evening. Another wave currently in Oregon will slide east through Idaho and Wyoming this evening and overnight, keeping mountain snow showers in the forecast for south and west aspects of the Beartooth/Absarokas and southern Bighorns. Accumulations will be light overall, but a few inches are possible in the mountains outside Cooke City. A few snow showers may clip far southeast MT late tonight into early tomorrow morning, but the majority of the energy will remain to the south.
Wednesday into the first part of the weekend, the pattern looks to transition to southwest flow aloft over the region as troughing develops along the West Coast and ridging noses in. Dry conditions will prevail into Friday, before energy advecting in from the southwest brings a return of snow showers to the western mountains late Friday into Saturday. Breezy conditions can be expected at times, but strong winds are not expected. High temperatures are forecast from the 40s to 50s most days, warmest on Wednesday and Saturday. While still aways out, there is potential for more unsettled conditions late Sunday into early next week as ensembles and clusters prog a large trough and associated low to push inland into the Rockies. This could bring cooler conditions and precipitation to portions of the region. STP
Aviation
Snow showers across the Absaroka-Beartooths will likely keep mountain obscurations in place into the overnight hours. Expect VFR conditions for all terminals on Wednesday. TS/PM
