Discussion
Issued at 1141 PM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will come to an end overnight as a cold front moves across the area. Clouds will be on the decrease overnight into early Thursday morning. High pressure will then build into the region Thursday afternoon. Abundant low level moisture may result in skies becoming mostly cloudy again during the day. Later in the day, mid-level moisture may result in partly to mostly cloudy skies Thursday night. Tranquil conditions should prevail through Saturday morning. There is still a great deal of uncertainty on the northward extent of the rain, 20-40% across central and east-central WI, on Saturday as the Canadian/ECMWF solution was drier than the GFS.
Dry conditions should prevail Sunday into Monday morning, before the next chance of rain (20-50%) arrives Monday afternoon. A more potent system will move into the central plains on Monday, then move into the Great Lakes region Monday night and Tuesday which will bring a soaking rain to the area. Current rain chances are 50- 70%, but will likely go up in the coming days. High pressure then build into the region next Wednesday. Temperatures will remain above normal over the next week. with above normal temperatures are likely for the month of November and the upcoming winter (Dec-Feb period). Also, we turn the clocks back Sunday morning as we switch to Central Standard Time. That means sunsets before 5 pm!.
Aviation
for 06Z TAF Issuance Issued at 1203 AM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026
A cold front is moving across north-central and central Wisconsin early this morning. Showers will likely end at RHI/AUW/CWA by the start time of the TAF period. Scattered storms will likely impact GRB/ATW/MTW thru 07Z before all rain exits eastern WI sites after 08Z Thu. MVFR and IFR ceilings will linger a bit longer early this morning before the clouds scatter out for a time.
With daytime heating, fair weather clouds are expected to redevelop over far northern WI after 15Z Thu, likely impacting RHI. Ceilings will likely start out as high end MVFR before becoming VFR by mid to late afternoon. Then clearing is expected by 00Z Fri.
Regarding winds, gusty southerly winds will persist early this morning, before winds shift to the northwest behind the cold front. Gusts up to 20 kts can be expected from late morning through the afternoon before winds subside. Low- level wind shear (LLWS) down to 1.5 kft AGL will persist through 10Z Thu.
