Mesoscale update
Issued at 922 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026
Quiet weather conditions will continue to prevail across our forecast area this morning as near term guidance continues to show a upper shortwave moving across Texas. Cloud cover will continue to gradually increase across the area as a quick look at GOES 16 visible satellite shows mid and high clouds moving across our CWA from west to east. Easterly winds will persist across the area with gusts up to 5-10 mph. Daytime highs will peak in the low 80s areawide. /CR/
Discussion
Issued at 325 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026
Mid and high clouds are beginning to increase to our west ahead of an upper shortwave currently moving into Texas. This system will shift northeastward toward the Mid MS Valley through this weekend, bringing a change to our weather after a prolonged dry period. Increasing mid level moisture later today will result in increasing clouds and patchy virga by this afternoon and evening as this moisture encounters drier low levels. By early tomorrow morning, the low levels will become saturated enough for scattered mostly light showers to spread across the area. Then by afternoon, we may see enough instability for a few heavier showers or a thunderstorm. Scattered convection will continue through Sunday, tapering off Sunday evening. No severe weather is expected. Rain may disrupt outdoor plans in some areas Saturday evening, but many areas will remain dry during peak candy hunting time. Just be sure to keep a close eye on the weather before venturing out, and have a backup plan if needed.
A more organized system is still on track to arrive next week, as an upper trough deepens across the central CONUS, bringing a cold front across the area Tuesday into Wednesday. This system will be accompanied by stronger deep layer shear, and 0-3 km bulk shear magnitudes pushing into the 30-50 kt range, though shear vectors may be largely boundary-parallel. Timing in guidance over the past few days has been mostly overnight, which would limit instability. However, there remains some potential for gusty winds if there is sufficient instability and storms become oriented efficiently with low level shear vectors. Continue to monitor this system in the coming days.
With the upper low cutting off into more of a slow moving bowling ball type look, clouds may linger behind this system into Wednesday and Thursday, but the chance for substantial rain will drop off quickly behind the front Wednesday. Temps will see a return to cooler mornings and milder days. /DL/
