Near term

(Today) Issued at 420 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026

A basic troughing west and ridging east upper level pattern was in place across the greater Lower-48. Moisture within the subtropical jet moving towards the Baja, and blow-off from convection to our west sending periods of cirrus across the Tennessee Valley. Clouds that were moving across the area earlier have faded, thus clear skies prevailed across the Valley. Because of the clear skies, light winds, longer nights and relative humidity values nearing 100 percent in some spots, patchy fog was forming. This fog should remain patchy, mainly in sheltered valleys and near bodies of water.

Any fog that forms should quickly dissipate shortly after sunrise. Surface high pressure over the western Great Lakes will build ESE towards the northern Appalachians by tonight. An anticyclonic flow rounding the high will keep an easterly winds of 4-7 mph over the area today. With just high clouds, high temperatures later today should rise into the upper 70s to around 80. Normal highs for today are around 71 for reference.

Short term

(Tonight through Sunday night) Issued at 420 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026

Milder conditions are expected tonight, with low temperatures cooling into the mid 50s to around 60 with light winds. With unsettled weather to our west, additional blow-off high clouds are expected. Expect another mild day Halloween as high temperatures rise into the mid/upper 70s. It may get a bit more spooky in the late afternoon and evening, as a system to our west nears, with many of the models producing light showers. Showers should they occur will be mainly west of the I-65 corridor late Sat afternoon and evening.

Coverage and intensity of shower activity should pick up late Sat night and into Sun, as a system traverses the area from west to east. This system should bring some much needed rainfall to the Valley. Model and blend output was showing a few thunderstorms mixed in with the more heavy showers mainly over the western half of our area. With the heavier showers, short-term rainfall amounts could produce ponding of water in area, with a minor risk of flooding (despite antecedent dry conditions). With good rain chances, low temperatures Sat night should cool into the mid 50s. Medium to high chances of showers (and a few thunderstorms over NW Alabama) continue on Sun, with highs into the mid 60s. Shower activity should taper off late Sun afternoon and evening. Lows should cool into the low/mid 50s. Area rainfall totals into Sun evening should range from over 1/2 of an inch west to a few tenths of an inch east.

Long term

(Monday through Thursday) Issued at 742 PM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

Northwest flow will become dominant aloft as the aforementioned trough responsible for the rain over the weekend begins to exit the eastern CONUS and upper ridging builds in ahead of our next system. After overcast skies and rain on Sunday, temperatures will rebound a bit on Monday with the building ridge to our west. Sfc high pressure over the Appalachians will keep dry NE flow in place and may be enough to result in clearing skies by Monday afternoon. A closed upper low will dig across Oklahoma and into the lower MS River Valley Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing increasing chances for rain and a few thunderstorms. Model trends over the past several days have been fairly inconsistent with this storm system, with today's runs continuing to slow the system down as well as pulling the sfc low farther south. Since the timing and evolution of this system will have big impacts on rainfall amounts and any potential for strong storms, we do not feel particularly confident in any specific details at this time. What we can speak to is the continued trend with a slower system, increasing our confidence that impacts to Election Day should be minimal with only low chances for rain (15-25%) at this time. Temperatures will remain near or just above normal for much of the long term, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s to lower 60s.

Aviation

(12Z TAFS) Issued at 627 AM CDT Fri Oct 30 2026

Late night patchy fog has produced brief VSBY reductions at some of the terminals within the last few hours. Given 5SM with BR at KMSL, have added a TEMPO for them through 13Z. Will stay with VFR conditions at KHSV. Any fog that forms will quickly dissipate shortly after daybreak as heating and mixing help it disperse. Periods of high altitude clouds are expected across the area today. Light winds early will become easterly 4-7kt in the late morning and much of the afternoon. Winds should become light and variable this evening.
