Key messages

Updated at 742 PM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

- Medium to high chances (60-80%) of showers and a low chance of a thunderstorm Saturday night into Sunday.

- Low to medium chances (30-50%) for showers and a few thunderstorms during the mid part of next week.

Near term

(Tonight) Issued at 742 PM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

Surface high pressure extended from the mid Atlantic coast through the TN Valley into the lower MS Valley. This will keep a mostly clear sky in place tonight. Patches of CI/CS are spilling east from the southern Plains trough axis, but should remain rather thin. Dew points are a bit higher tonight compared to 24 hours ago as easterly flow has advected dew points in the 50s westward into most of AL and far southern middle TN. This may allow for some patchy fog to develop late tonight. Temperatures will dip into the middle 40s to around 50.

Short term

(Friday through Sunday night) Issued at 742 PM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

The trough over the southern Plains will slowly advance northeast into the Ozarks through lower MS Valley Friday into Friday night, then into the TN and lower OH valley Saturday. At the same time, the surface ridge will shift into New England through the Carolinas, while the 8h high shifts into the middle Appalachians. This will allow southeast to south flow into the TN and lower MS Valleys. A warm Friday is ahead with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Showers will spread east with time Saturday, although it will have to fight drier air further east into the ridge axis east of I-65. So there is lower confidence in rain reaching our eastern counties Saturday night. By the time the rain ends, r rainfall of 0.25-0.7 inches (highest west, lowest east) looks good at this point. Rain is forecast to depart with the shortwave on Sunday night. There is only a very low chance of a thunderstorm with this activity. After highs in the 70s Saturday, a very cool but humid day is on tap for Sunday. Highs will only reach the lower to middle 60s in valley areas, and upper 50s atop the higher elevations east of I-65.

Long term

(Monday through Thursday) Issued at 742 PM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

Northwest flow will become dominant aloft as the aforementioned trough responsible for the rain over the weekend begins to exit the eastern CONUS and upper ridging builds in ahead of our next system. After overcast skies and rain on Sunday, temperatures will rebound a bit on Monday with the building ridge to our west. Sfc high pressure over the Appalachians will keep dry NE flow in place and may be enough to result in clearing skies by Monday afternoon. A closed upper low will dig across Oklahoma and into the lower MS River Valley Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing increasing chances for rain and a few thunderstorms. Model trends over the past several days have been fairly inconsistent with this storm system, with today's runs continuing to slow the system down as well as pulling the sfc low farther south. Since the timing and evolution of this system will have big impacts on rainfall amounts and any potential for strong storms, we do not feel particularly confident in any specific details at this time. What we can speak to is the continued trend with a slower system, increasing our confidence that impacts to Election Day should be minimal with only low chances for rain (15-25%) at this time. Temperatures will remain near or just above normal for much of the long term, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s to lower 60s.

Aviation

(00Z TAFS) Issued at 448 PM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

VFR conditions are forecast to prevail through the TAF period at both terminals. Patchy dense fog may impact either terminal late tonight, but confidence is not high enough to include at this time.
