: New 12Z Aviation Discussion:
Key messages
- Dry and temperate conditions persist through the end of the work week amid a gradual warming trend.
- Rain chances increase into the weekend, highest late Saturday into Sunday.
Short term
(Today through Friday) Issued at 325 AM EDT Thu Oct 29 2026
High pressure over the northeast in conjunction with the low pressure system off the southeast coast will be our main pattern for today resulting in morning cloud cover over the northeast. Patchy fog is also possible in low lying areas through the morning hours especially for central Georgia. As skies clear out temps will warm into the mid to upper 70s today which is around 5 degrees above normal. For Friday the pattern begins to change as we see the upper level ridging continue to dampen and the trough to our west begin pushing into the Arklatex region. At the surface we will see one more day of high pressure but with moisture beginning to return to the area ahead of the next chance for rain. Temps Friday will be in the upper 70s to low 80s across the area as a result. Morning lows continue to be in the mid to upper 40s.
Long term
(Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 325 AM EDT Thu Oct 29 2026
Weekend conditions remain uncertain with high model variability in the ejection of a mid level shortwave out of the southwest. Precipitation output from this system has trended both later (more towards late Sunday to early Monday) and with less QPF. The main modes of variability are associated with the low which is currently being cut-off over the southwest coast. Models notoriously have a difficult time resolving cut-off low movement and the GFS trends are likely moving in the right, slower, direction. What this means for the southeast is more time for the polar ridge to move overhead, countering some of the lift potential going into the late weekend.
Another factor of import will be where the southern terminating edge of the near surface high ends. This will determine where PWATs drop off and could act as a focal point for any precipitation. This effect can be seen when comparing PWATs for the GFS and ECMWF. A more southerly boundary of the high means low level easterly flow developed CAD may limit moisture more towards PWATs of 1" rather than 1.5"+.
Temperatures are likely to continue their downtrend as we get into the Sunday-Monday timeframe. CAD will reduce highs, though we will likely still reach the 60s with lower moisture. Conditions rewarm into the 70s as the shortwave passes and high pressure redevelops into mid next week.
