Discussion

KEY MESSAGES:

- Anticipate cooler temperatures and periods of valley rain and mountain snow Saturday evening through Monday morning.

Radar currently shows weak returns northwest of Missoula. Some of these returns may be producing light precipitation, especially in the mountains. Use caution during the morning commute if traveling across Lookout or Marias Passes as slick driving may be present although this is a very low probability outcome.

The rest of the day trends drier and these conditions will continue into Friday. Temperatures will remain near normal for this time of year, but physically it might feel cool as cloud cover limits the warmth of sunshine, especially on Friday.

The next system arrives on Saturday, snow levels which begin above 6000 feet may lower to 4500 feet on Sunday. The majority of precipitation will fall south of I-90 and a trace to 3 slushy inches may accumulate at Lost Trail Pass, most elevations of Lemhi County ID, and higher valleys of southwest MT. Sunday morning at Lost Trail Pass there may be brief periods of winter driving conditions.

High pressure is forecast through at least midweek (3-5 Nov) with temperatures returning a few degrees above normal. This time of year high pressure would allow for valley inversions, which could keep valleys from full warming potential along with patchy morning fog or low stratus clouds.

Aviation

A weak disturbance is producing mid level clouds with no measurable precipitation at area terminals. Winds will remain light but a northeasterly gradient develops today. High pressure builds throughout the day and will keep flying conditions as VFR but cloud cover remains over the region.
