Discussion
The rest of today through Wednesday:
Winds become light again tonight, which will allow areas of fog to develop again, especially along river channels. After sunrise Friday morning, fog will begin to dissipate, eroding by early afternoon. The same scenario is likely (40-60% chance) Friday night into Saturday morning.
Otherwise, Friday and Saturday will be mild and mostly dry. There is a chance (20-50%) for rain and snow showers, primarily over the mountains, as PWATs increase to 150-200% of normal and weak shortwaves in the flow provide a little energy. Currently, only light showers are expected, with a 30% chance of up to 0.10" of rain and SWE over the mountains.
Sunday into Monday, a low pressure system is expected to move onshore and through the region. Uncertainty remains in the exact track and timing of this system. However, there is higher confidence in conditions becoming breezy Sunday night into Monday as a cold front associated with the system moves through and in snow accumulation being limited to the mountains and immediate foothills. Widespread gusts out of the northwest of 20 to 40 mph are expected into Monday afternoon. For the plains, the current best chance (50-70%) for at least 0.50" of rain is from Billings east. During the overnight hours, particularly Monday night, a little snow may mix in over the higher hills of, but the chance of any accumulating snow is less than 20%. Over the mountains, north facing slopes will be favored for snow. The Bighorns have the best chance for snow, with a 70% chance of at least 6" through Monday night. Over the Absaroka/Beartooth mountains, the chance for the same is 50%, and over the Crazy mountains, the chance is <20%. Those planning to recreate in the mountains should be prepared for wintry conditions.
Behind the system exiting late Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday look to remain mostly dry. A weak cold front late Tuesday into early Wednesday may bring an isolated shower or two (<20% chance). Archer
Aviation
Widespread fog and low stratus are expected to impact the region early Friday leading to IFR and LIFR conditions. These conditions are expected to begin to form around 12 AM tonight before becoming more widespread by around 6 AM Friday. Fog is expected to dissipate throughout the morning and be gone by around 12 PM Friday. Torgerson
