Forecaster's discussionIssued 10/31/2026, 3:08 AM EDT

Key messages

- Mostly cloudy and mild for Halloween; isolated sprinkles or very light showers cannot be ruled out completely

- Mild and damp pattern expected through at least mid week, with rain chances highest late Tuesday into Wednesday

.DISCUSSION (Today through Friday): Issued at 308 AM EDT Sat Oct 31 2026

A change is in the offing with temperatures remaining above normal but much milder than in recent weeks, and repeated opportunities for precipitation, with rain chances much of the time over the next week.

A weak upper level disturbance passing through the area today into Sunday will bring mostly cloudy to cloudy skies, and may produce some light showers, mainly Sunday. A few isolated sprinkles or showers will be possible today into tonight, but deep low level dry air will significantly limit this potential.

Rain chances will be present in a few spots but lower Monday into Monday night as a much more substantial system pushes toward the area. The cold front associated with this system appears poised to push through the area sometime around mid week, though model differences are fairly substantial with the timing of the boundary given disagreement in the handling of the complex pair of upper level waves that will accompany it. Will need higher rain chances mainly late Tuesday into Wednesday, though lower chances will linger into Friday.

Temperatures will remain above normal throughout the week, largely in the mid 60s to low 70s for highs and the 40s to mid 50s for lows. Normals at Indianapolis right now are around 60 and 40 degrees. Cold advection in the wake of the mid week front is relatively weak, with impacts to temperatures more significant overnight than during the day.

.AVIATION (06Z TAF Issuance): Issued at 114 AM EDT Sat Oct 31 2026

Impacts:

- None

Discussion:

Widespread mid and high cloud will gradually continue to overspread the area with ceilings slowly dropping to near 8-12KFT through the period as a modest upper level disturbance moves toward the area.

A sprinkle or shower cannot be ruled out at times during the period, but low level dry air is likely to severely limit this potential, with virga the most likely outcome. Any precip would be light and unlikely to cause impacts.

Winds will generally be easterly through the period, between 080-110 degrees, strengthening to 8-10KT during the daytime and dropping to 4-8KT or less overnight.
