Key messages
- Quiet mild weather through Thursday.
- An area of subtropical moisture may affect far SE CO Friday; Showers possible in the mtns.
- More impactful storm to affect the region late Saturday into late Tuesday.
Short term
Issued at 113 PM MDT Tue Oct 27 2026
Weather will continue to be quiet from the rest os today into early Friday. Anticipate mild temps in the 60s and 70s plains and 50s larger valleys. Warmest day will be tomorrow.
Long term
Issued at 113 PM MDT Tue Oct 27 2026
On Friday, an area of subtropical moisture is forecast to move north- northeast from old Mexico and move towards far southeast Colorado. This area of moisture, if it verifies, could bring a period or precip to far southeast Colorado on Friday, However, I have seen situations similar to this one in the past, with the moisture moving too far east and moving into KS. For now my confidence is not high on this forecast verifying.
In the meantime, moisture will increase over the higher terrain, and we will likely see some isolated to scattered showers in the mountains on Friday.
For Saturday, weak mid level ridging moves over the region. Any showers which develop this day will be isolated, and mainly confined to the higher terrain.
The weather ramps up Sunday and is fcst to last into Tuesday. A Sharp mid level trough is fcst to drop southeast from the Pacific northwest. As this trough move through, another band of subtropical moisture coming off the California coast moves across the region. At this time this looks to be a mountain storm. Temps will be warm initially, but will cool off quite a bit as the mid level trough moves towards the region. Overall, we would see some rain at higher elevations initially, but believe the brunt of the precip in the mtns will be snow. This is shown in the NBM 1D forecast statistical products for the higher elevation points to our west.
With that said, if the storm does wrap up considerably as it moves into KS, we could get some wrap-around moisture over the plains, especially during the Monday/Tuesday time frame. If the system drops a bit farther south and east as hinted by the latest 12Z EC, then the plains may see a more favorable upslope pattern develop.
How this system impacts us will be very dependent on the track and intensification of the trough. Usually storms dropping southeast and intensifying as they do, can bring impactful weather to the region.
Overall, we should see storm system which brings beneficial snow pack to the the mountains Sunday-TUesday. Of interest, per USGS, Lake Powell has risen 14 feet since mid September.
